African Student Association (ASA) is a campus organization with a focus on African students. We strive to integrate and educate the University of Missouri community on African culture, politics and economics.
We cater to the special needs of domestic and international students from various African countries. We cater those needs by providing a safe environment where students can discuss their problems as well as celebrate their achievements.
Our events are geared towards increasing the understanding of African issues that may not be immediately visible. Some of our events are educational and others are entertainment or a combination of both. As far as educating, we have planned such events as Black Thoughts Series where we have discussed “The African and African American Experience” (link, see copy of that event) For entertainment, we host The World Cup as part of International Education Week with Missouri International Student Council. Soccer is a global sport and we invite anyone on campus to put a team together and come and play (link to the event). We also combine education and entertainment through our Taste of Africa program. For the Taste of Africa, we pick a country (i.e. Ghana) and cook food from that country and invite students to attend and taste the cuisine while they learn about the culture, politics, and various traditions of that particular nation. (add link to taste of Nigeria and Ghana)
On campus, ASA works with a variety of organizations and departments. ASA is both an umbrella organization of Legion of Black Collegians (LBC) (and link) and Missouri International Student Council (MISC) (add link). As an umbrella organization, LBC and MISC offer funding, promotion and publicity for our events. ASA is also getting its funding from Organization Resource Group (ORG) (add link). ORG offers allocation for ASA to promote its events through honorariums, MU Info, the Maneater, copy services etc… We also fund our activities by working concession stands at Mizzou’s sports events
