Greek Judicial Board
The Mission Statement:
The Greek Judicial Board is established to advance the general welfare of the Greek community, as well as the welfare of the student body of the University of Missouri-Columbia. The Board is responsible for upholding the policies and bylaws that govern the organizations affiliated with the Interfraternity Council, Multi-Cultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Panhellenic Association. The Board operates as a peer review board and as a recommending body to the Office of Student Life, while fostering the core values of respect, responsibility, discovery, and excellence that are endorsed by the University of Missouri-Columbia. Through the Greek Judicial Board, this peer judgment will be aided by the mutual knowledge of the aspects and concerns of the Greek Community and its individual social and service Greek-letter organizations.
The basic philosophy of discipline at the University of Missouri-Columbia is one of education. As such, it focuses on the growth and development of individual students by encouraging self-discipline and by fostering a respect for the rights and privileges of others. The purpose of the Board is to provide an orderly and consistent body that fosters the aims and ideals of service, leadership, scholarship, and brotherhood/sisterhood, while protecting the freedoms entitled to its members. The intent of the Board follows the assumption that Greek organizations should be able to take responsibility for their actions and that their peers reserve the right to reprimand their behaviors.
Any individual who assumes voluntary membership in a social or service organization recognized by the Office of Greek Life does not surrender his/her rights nor escapes responsibility as a citizen, but also acquires additional rights and responsibilities as a member of the Greek community. This includes the idea that each fraternity or sorority, in its entirety, enters the Greek community voluntarily and thus assumes all obligations of performance and behavior reasonably enforced by all members of the Greek community, as well as the institution itself.
The functions of the Judicial Board are:
1. To provide a peer level hearing body which is aware of and sensitive to
the needs and problems within the Greek community as well as the
University's disciplinary philosophy.
2. To educate Greek students both as to the responsibilities inherent in
being a member of the Greek community and the University community
and of those rules and regulations that govern the Greek community.
3. When necessary, to provide sanctions to responsible parties that have an
underlying and overwhelming focus on education. The goal of these
sanctions should be to prevent the violations from occurring again – not
simply punishing the responsible parties.
4. To provide those students who serve on the board opportunities for
leadership and service to the Greek community and the University of
Missouri-Columbia.
