PHA Formal RecruitmentRecruitment Information Panhellenic Recruitment is a mutual selection process where a potential member has the opportunity to meet with chapter members, ask a variety of questions, and tour the living units. Formal Recruitment is scheduled for August 17-24, 2008. All women participating in Formal Recruitment will need to arrive on Sunday, August 17, 2008 to move into their respective residence hall. Recruitment is a fun-filled week of socials, during which sororities share their sisterhood with potential members. Formal Recruitment is five days filled with socials. These days allow you to get a glimpse into the personalities and values of each of the 14 chapters. Just as sororities are looking for the right women to join their chapters, you should be looking for a chapter that fits you. Each sorority has something unique to offer and with 14 chapters, you will be able to find a group of women with whom you identify. Over the first two days of Recruitment, you will visit all 14 chapters so you can get a glimpse of sorority life in general. On Wednesday, you will visit up to ten chapters and see skits that will give you insight into each of the chapters. Thursday will take you to a maximum of six chapters to learn about philanthropy and what it means to each chapter. Friday you will visit up to three chapters. This day is sentimental and will be your final look at the chapters before you both decide which chapter is the right match for you. Saturday is Bid Day where invitations are extended by chapters to join their sisterhood. This year the Panhellenic Association is excited to welcome Sigma Sigma Sigma to campus. As a new colony, Sigma Sigma Sigma will only be participating in the first round of Formal Recruitment and will not be taking a pledge class from that process. However, they will be participating in our informal Recruitment process (Continuous Open Bidding) after Formal Recruitment ends. We know that this is just a general explanation of Formal Recruitment. Once your registration is complete (payment and transcript received) a booklet with more in-depth information will be sent to you in the mail. Important Dates for PHA Recruitment Registration fee Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is Formal Recruitment? At Mizzou, Formal Recruitment is a process that allows interested women to get to know each sorority chapter before deciding which organization is best for her. If you decide to go through Formal Recruitment, you (and over 1,000 other women) will move into your residence hall a week before school starts in the fall. To make the process easier, you will be assigned a group of Pi Chis (Panhellenic Counselors), who are sorority women disaffiliated from their chapters during Recruitment week. These women will be with you throughout the week, and they can answer any questions you may have about Recruitment or Greek life. During Recruitment week, you will visit all the chapters on campus and get to know women in each chapter. Each round of Recruitment consists of planned social events: for example, Sisterhood Day allows the sorority women to show their sense of humor with a skit, while Philanthropy Day focuses on each chapter’s community service work. These socials will help you figure out the goals, values, and personality of each chapter on campus, and help you decide which chapter is best for you. Keep in mind that Recruitment is a mutual selection process, so while you are deciding which chapters you feel most comfortable with, the women in each chapter are also trying to figure out which women would fit best into their sorority. What are letters of recommendation? Are they necessary? Letters of recommendation are letters written by a sorority alumna recommending you to her sorority. While recommendations are definitely appreciated by chapters, you are not responsible for securing them. It is actually a chapter’s responsibility to obtain one if they need more information. However, if you know an alumna, it is not uncommon to ask her if she would be willing to write a letter of recommendation to her sorority. Each chapter’s national organization has their own protocol for recommendation letters, so if you have any questions, encourage her to contact them for more information. Are there sororities on campus that don’t participate in Formal Recruitment? Yes. Panhellenic chapters who are eligible after Formal Recruitment ends may choose to participate in our informal recruitment process, Continuous Open Bidding (COB). If you would like to participate, please fill out a COB application in the Greek Life office and return it to the mailbox of the Panhellenic VP of Recruitment-External. Mizzou has a strong National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) with three historically African-American sororities as well as three Multicultural sororities in the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) who have their own recruitment/intake processes. Students who wish to find out more about these councils should contact their representative governing councils for more information. Contact information is available at www.mugreeklife.com. What if I go through the Recruitment process and decide that joining a sorority is not for me? If a potential member decides during Recruitment that joining a sorority is something that is not right for them, she may withdraw at any time throughout the Recruitment process. The Panhellenic Association encourages potential members to participate and recommends discussing withdrawing with your Pi Chi, but the decision to withdraw from Recruitment is determined by the potential member. Are there any scholarships or financial aid to help pay for the sorority fees? A student’s financial aid is first used to pay for tuition and residence hall contracts. If a student has money left over, the university writes a refund check in the student’s name. That money can be used to pay for sorority fees or any other financial obligations. If a student moves into her chapter’s house, she may receive a larger refund check because she is no longer paying for dorm housing. In that case, the extra money could be used to pay housing expenses to the sorority. In addition, many chapters have local or national scholarship programs exclusively for members; you can ask each chapter for more information. What is the average cost of being in a sorority? (Based on annual costs) What does the fee for Recruitment cover? The fee for a potential member pays to participate in Recruitment covrs room and board, a processing fee, and three Recruitment t-shirts that are given at check-in. By paying this fee and participating in Formal Recruitment, potential members get to move into the residence hall three days before other students. What are Pi Chis? Pi Chis (Panhellenic Counselors) are women who have been chosen to disaffiliate from their specific chapters for the duration of Recruitment. Pi Chis are available to all potential members so that they are well informed throughout the Recruitment process. Pi Chis are responsible for distributing schedules, answering questions, and being a confidante while a potential member is participating in Panhellenic Recruitment. Any more questions?
