We are a group of passionate, committed individuals who see themselves as members of a larger community. A community that feels the pain of urban decay, environmental mismanagment, and of youth without good schools. We work in conjunction with the office of community involvement in the department of student life to provide meaningful experiences of service for the community of Mizzou.

Alternative Spring Break volunteers are people of vision. They see that the combined effect of many actions is the ultimate good. They are part of a movement to revitalize communities, restore our environment, and leave the children of America with a brighter tomorrow. Join us to create a nation we can all be proud of.

Mission of ASB: » Educate a diverse group of students about specific social and environmental issues by immersing them in communities across the nation to engage in meaningful, direct service. » Build future leaders that are active, conscientious citizens with knowledge and concern for solving our nation's most pressing social and environmental problems.

History of ASB at the University of Missouri In 1991, ASB began with three trips. They went to Ivanhoe, Virginia, where a group worked with the Ivanhoe Civic League to make a variety of renovations and repairs in this small, Appalachian coal-mining community. A second trip went to Dupree, South Dakota to work with the Sioux Indian YMCA, and the third group went to South Carolina to work with Habitat for Humanity. In 1992, ASB expanded to five trips. Two trips returned to Ivanhoe, Virginia and the Sioux YMCA in South Dakota. This time, there were two Habitat trips, one to Georgia and the second to Texas. They also initiated a program in Sikeston, Missouri to remodel an old school into a youth recreation center. ASB has continued to expand in the number of trips offered, providing a variety of issues. In 2001, we offered 12 trips to Texas, Florida, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Arkansas and Georgia. In August 2001, ASB decided to end the relationship with the University YMCA. Today ASB is an affiliate of MU's Department of Student Life.
