    Article I : Name
    The name of this organization shall be the Buddhist Association MU. Its abbreviation shall be MUBA.

    Article II: Statement of Purpose
    The Association exists to introduce Buddhism through understanding and undertaking Buddhist teachings using meditation practice, discussion groups, & community service. It strives to enable individuals to find peace and happiness irrespective of the conditions life may offer.

    Article III: Membership, Eligibility & Requirements
    MUBA welcomes all those interested in Buddhism to apply for membership. Any individual over the age of 18 may be an active member to vote or hold office. Upon registration with the Secretary and participation in two activities, an individual becomes eligible to vote or hold office. The requirement for maintaining MUBA membership is involvement in two activities per year. The activities include all MUBA general meetings and events. At the end of each year, members who do not meet this requirement automatically lose membership rights (to vote or hold office). No membership dues are required. We will not restrict membership based upon race, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, or handicap. The organization shall remain in compliance with all federal, state, local, and M.U. policies.

    Article IV: Organizational Structure
    MUBA is organized through three main committees: Executive, Buddhist Studies, and Community Service. An elected chairperson will lead each committee. The responsibilities of each committee are described as follows.
  1. The Executive Committee shall set meeting agendas, conduct meetings, hold elections, keep records of meetings, keep current profiles of all members and the committees that they are a part of, manage financial activities, collect activities report from other committees, and coordinate all other committees.


  2. The Buddhist Studies Committee shall organize activities that promote learning of Buddhist Principles. Activities may include discussions, lectures, meditation sessions, temple visits/retreats, and study groups. Additional responsibilities include maintaining the MUBA library of books and cassettes.


  3. The Community Service Committee shall plan all external community service oriented activities. Activities may include planning visits to convalescent homes, shelters, and hospitals, along with picnics, benefit performances, and fund raising.

The responsibilities of the committee chairs are:

  1.  Plan activities.
  2.  Carry out other duties as described above.
  3.  Maintain records, plans, and activities in a database. After an activity, the responsible committee shall file
       a report with the Executive Committee.

  4.  Recruit committee members as needed to carry out the committee responsibilities described above.

    Article V: Process for Selection of Officers
    Chairpersons will be elected before the end of every year. Members can nominate other members, including themselves, for positions. The outcome will be determined by a simple majority (>50%) vote by the entire membership. The President will only vote in instances where there is a tie among candidates.

    Article VI: Process for Removal of Officers
    Any active member can question an officer’s legitimacy to hold office. Should this occur, charges will be brought forth during a meeting and the officer in question will be given an opportunity to speak in his or her defense. After the proceedings, a vote will be taken to remove the officer. A 2/3-majority vote by the entire membership is required for removal to occur.

    Article VII: Meetings
  1. Meetings shall be held on a weekly basis throughout the school year.
  2. A quorum shall consist of 40% of the members at a meeting.
  3. Emergency meetings can be called a chairperson.

    Article VIII: Making Amendments
    The following is the procedure to create an amendment:
  1. Announce the intent to add an amendment during a general meeting.
  2. The proposed amendment shall be proposed and discussed during the next general meeting.
  3. After discussion of the proposed amendment, a vote shall be taken among the committee chairs. If the proposal receives a simple majority vote (> 50%) of the entire membership, it is then submitted to SOGA for approval.

    Article IX: Faculty/Staff Advisor
    The faculty/staff advisor is a full-time (or 75%) employee of the University of Missouri-Columbia. Graduate Assistants who are employed at least 75% time may serve as advisors with approval of the Coordinator of Student Organizations.

    Article X: Dissolution
    To dissolve this organization, it has to be voted and approved by a 2/3 majority of the entire membership. In the event of dissolution, all unspent funds shall be donated to non-profit charity groups after meeting all fiscal liabilities of this organization.
