The
University of Missouri took on the University of Iowa
Hawkeyes on Sunday the 15th of February in the Iowa
Hawkeye Dome. Iowa is a Conference opponant of the University
of Missouri within the Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference
(GRLC). The 1-0 Hawkeyes, fresh off a victory over Marquette,
and having a rest day to prepare for the Tigers, looked
to suprise the Mizzou squad with their improved team
stocked with Chicago area freshmen.
Despite
the successes Iowa had recruiting, it was the Mizzou
Freshman class who suprised Iowa as seven Tiger Freshmen
put points on the board.
The
well balanced offense of the Tigers was no match for
the Iowa Hawkeyes. A three minute non-releasable penalty
for illegal round bottom goals put Iowa in the box
long enough for the Tigers to take a 2-0 lead that
would not be relenquished for the game. Senior Cole
Dimond (Rockhurst Jesuit, KC) and Senior Mike Brauss
(Parkway Central, STL) would lead the way with one
goal each in the opening 3 minutes of play.
Although
the Hawkeyes would score the third goal of the game
in the 1st quarter, Sophomore Tiger Tom Mueth (Christian
Brothers Prep, STL) would light up the cage for the
third goal of the game less than one minute later.
By halftime the Tigers had a 7 goal lead and were
able to play every play en route to a 17-9 victory.
Leading
the Tiger charge were Freshman Brad Brown (Columbia-Hickman,
Columbia, MO), Senior Cole Dimond, Sophomore Tom Mueth
with three goals each, and Freshman Tom McKittrick
(DeSmet Jesuit, STL) with three assists.
