Suceava
city with a magnificent history, it was founded on the bank of the Suceava River before the 14th century. More important, this was the capital of medieval Moldavia from 1375 until 1565. Undoubtedly the peak of its development was during the reign of Stephen the Great in the 15th century. By that time Suceava developed as a trading center and customs point, with a strong citadel. Stephen was a legend, and he was feared by the Turks and Tatars, who by that time were trying to conquer Moldavia. After he died, there was a temporary void of political power and soon Suceava vas ravaged by the Turks and lost most of its importance.
he rich history of the places is still alive in the city's monuments. Most impressive of all, Stephen's citadel is now a city park. From the heights of the fortress you can contemplate a great view of the town. Then, go back to the center, where you will find the 16th century Church of St. George built under the rule of the follower of Stephen the Great. This fine church features beautiful Byzantine frescoes. The massive bell tower of the Church of St. Demetrius attracts the visitor from afar. This monument has been standing in Suceava since 1535, the time of another great king of Moldavia, Petru Rares. Finally, walk along the peaceful, sunny streets of the small town to another unique sacred building: the Zamca monastery. Finished in the 17th century, with great architectural proportions, sometime along the way it was deserted and now only its picturesque ruins stand to defeat t he time.
he whole region of Suceava is packed with signs of its medieval flourishment. Not far from the town, 10 km to the east, you will find the small village of Patrauti. The church here, built by Stephen the Great in 1487, features some of the finest 15th century frescoes in all of Moldavia.
ery few people know about the interesting monastery of Dragomirna. About 12 km to the west of Suceava, this unique piece of architecture was built in 1607. If you have time, take the road through the village. This way, you can see the elegant silhouette of the church from afar (see photo). When you enter inside the strong fortified walls, you have quite a surprise. The church is extremely narrow, but very tall. This weird shape is crowned by a tower, marvelously carved in stone. Of the many intricate patterns, no two are alike
