Iota Lambda Sevice Activities
Central Missouri Food Bank
July 19, 2003
Cluck cluck goes the chicken. A gentle breeze whistles through the air. The faint lowing of cows can be heard in the distance. Ok ok, I'll stop kidding around. We aren't really on a farm, the chickens are clearly no longer clucking, the breeze is coming from the freezer, and the lowing I hear is the ventilation system.
What started as a normal day for most folks soon became an SAI bonding opportunity. We arrived in pieces at the Steak 'N shake to share summer chit chat over scrambled eggs. Heather soon stole the show with an outstanding idea for community opera education for the fall. "It will be a great way for SAI to get its name out there and will cost next to nothing" states Heather. Hmmm, definitely something to consider.
After finishing our breakfast, we drive to the imaginary farm previously mentioned: A.K.A. The Central Missouri Food Bank. You can tell we are ambitious, but we don't know what to expect. When we arrive our task is given to us. "Take the frozen teriyaki chicken pieces out of the large boxes and portion them into smaller bags." Looking at the boxes, I could tell it was more chicken than one person could eat in a lifetime.
Working at the food bank was more than bagging chicken. It was also a chance to participate in priceless sisterhood moments. It was truely enjoyable to joke, sing, and share movie critiques with my fellow SAI sisters. We took a tour of the warehouse and it soon became apparent how much need there is for volunteers like us. I would definitely help them again, but I will never look at teriyaki sauce the same again!
